Identifying tartans?
Inspired by the pictures of NewYorkBen in the X-kilt tutorial I went to a fabric store in town and found these two that I liked. Not sure yet which one to use (first) in a black X-kilt.
Anyone knows what tartans they are? With the help of Google I found that the right one is probably Stewart Black, the left one I have no idea. Maybe not even a real tartan?

Second question: I know very little about restrictions on using tartans, but would anyone really object to that usage? Were I to make a proper tartan kilt I would of course do some more research to not step on any toes.

Welcome aboard!
I'm sure one of the resident tartan experts will be along shortly to help you out (I think you're right about the Stewart Black though, and the left one looks like a variation of MacLeod to me).
With regard to your second question, here's a couple of threads which go into excruciating detail!
Cheers,
Cameron

Will check those threads out.
Oh, and what I meant by the first part is having tartan on the inner part of the box pleats.

Not sure about the yellow one. It could be a fashion tartan. Someone else might know.
Regarding your second question - there are those who are peeved if you wear their tartan with no connection. There are those who don't give a toss what people like me think about their clothes. Which camp are you in? ;)

Welcome enemix, from North Carolina USA. You are correct on the Stuart Black. I am not sure on the other tartan, but there are many here who will know.On your second question there are many opinions, from wear what you want to only if you have a good connection.I personally have only international tartans while I search my background. I have a Scottish connection on my mother's side, but not to a certain clan. again welcome .

The yellow one is a fashion sett. That does not preclude the weaver, whoever that was, had a name for it but we will probably never know.

I take it the yellow one is a go then. Is the Stewart Black considered universal or restricted?
Either way it'll just be on the inner pleats so I don't think anyone will notice, at least not around here.
When I get to make a more traditional kilt I'll probably go for Scandinavian tartan or possibly the X Marks one.

Black Stewart is considered universal, and is actually one of the more commonly used ones.
