In ACTUAL wool tartan, no- but I wear cargo shorts any time the kilt is not appropriate, and several of them are 'plaid'. The shop is too dangerous for that much wool to be swinging around in, and I don't want to ruin one of my kilts with dye/glue/open flames/metal shavings.
I also like the thigh pockets in cargo shorts because I hate having a wallet in my rear pocket, it messes up my back. As a parent cargo pockets are fantastic as well.
