Steve: I use a similar mind trick myself when I have a tough decision to make, but without the coin. I simply make up my mind, but then live with it for a while (assuming I have the time). If I start having serious second thoughts about my decision, then I'll alter it.
For example, some years ago we had a huge (85,000 acres) wildfire around Los Alamos. We were forced to evacuate our homes and take whatever we could in our cars. It was tough deciding what to take or leave behind, especially in some circumstances, eg Do I take my PS-3 or my wife?
As for non-family kilts, I own a number, eg Clan MacDonald and the Macleod of Harris. I have no ill feelings at all about wearing those tartans. But, in each case I know something about the history/legend of the clan. And it was largely that knowledge that led me to the kilt in the first place, examples being the alliance between Angus Og and Robert the Bruce in the First War of Independence, and the history/legend of Alasdair Crotach Macleod.

I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.
