Not knowing that there would eventually be an online forum called xmarksthescot with a member named "jockscot" we used to refer to this process as "forming" our berets or balmorals.
we also found that the bathroom sink accomplished the same effect far more efficiently (albeit less romantically) than leaving our headdress in the local burn/river over night.
I mean no offence to Jock as he was kind enough to teach the forum about the process but sometimes I get the impression that folks here think he invented it...
