At the grocery store today......
I just got back from the grocery store a few minutes ago. I wanted to test drive my new dress sporran. In the store, one lady stopped me to say, "I just love your outfit". Her husband, standing next to her, looked none to pleased. Next, I approached a group of teenage boys expecting to get the "nice skirt" comment. Instead, it was thumbs up, "Way to go!", "nice kilt". The girl at the checkout wanted to know what the special ocassion was... "Sunday supper, of course."
As for the sporran, it weighs a bit more than my others... presumably due to the metal arch... and doesn't bounce around as much. I also noticed that the finial at the top tended to rub against my belt buckle a bit. In addition, it seems a bit cumbersome when sitting down because of its height. I'm either going to have to wear it a bit lower, or dispense with the belt altogether. Anyone else have experience with dress sporrans or know of any rules of thumb with regards to same.?

I'll try and post a picture shortly. It does seem a bit more awkward than the day sporrans I have. I've been inspired by Freelander to attempt to build a sporran from scratch. I was going to base it on the dress model but I'm having second thoughts. I think I need to ponder that one a bit more.

Go for it Blu......If I can help let me know.
When I wear my dress sporran I don't use a belt I feel it is un-necessary with a Prince Charlie. I do remember reading that a belt wasn't necessary with evening wear. Although you can use an evening belt which isn't so wide. This should help the rubbing problem. Its either that or wearing it lower down.
All the best.....David

Hi Blu,
Firstly, the "metal arch" on your sporran is known as a Cantle!
Secondly, traditionally there should be roughly 2½" to 3" between the bottom of your belt buckle and the top of your sporran - but no more than that (or you might trip over it ( ) and, besides, it will look ridiculous!!) OK, when you sit there might still be contact between the two, but it's really nothing to get worried about. If it does concern you, move your sporran to one side as, or before, you sit.
Dispensing with the belt rather depends upon what other kit you are wearing. As David says, with a Prince Charlie jacket and waistcoat, he does not wear a belt - which is absolutely correct. A belt should NOT be worn with a PC! See my photo at:

A belt buckle with this would spoil the clean, uncluttered line, and would be half-hidden by the waistcoat anyway.

thanx for the link, bubba. That's very much the style I like. The price looked pretty good as well. Wonder if it's real leather?

This is exactly the type of information I was interested in. Thanks, Hamish! This is a great help. I don't yet have a PC, but should I consider dispensing with the belt while wearing an Argyll?

I appreciate the offer... I know I'll have questions coming up once I get started. I'm still sourcing materials at the moment.

This is the sporran I bought a couple of weeks ago. Nicely made of genuine leather and the price was right.
I also have a semi-dress and a plain black day sporran for more practical wear.
