It probably is real leather but I wouldn't bet the the quality of the leather. That style is referred to as a hunting sporran and I've seen it on several sites. It probably wouldn't be terribly hard to make. The from and back are identical in shape and a strap and snap holds it closed. There is a gusset between the front and back for depth. You could easily change the closure to a front button and loop if you chose.

Well that certainly would be one option. Purchase a sporran that you like and modify it to suit. I may not have the same "I did it myself" factor. Also, doing it yourself gives the end product a "one of" appeal. Have you done any work with stiff leather?

Yup blu, I have and you really don't need to use really stiff heavy leather. With stiff leather a sewing awl is a good tool unless you prefer to lace it together. Another option is cut the parts and take them to a shoe repair or leather shop and have them sewed by machine. A relatively light weight latigo leather would be good for a hunting sporran. I like latigo because it's pretty weather resistant stuff being oil tanned.

This is exactly the type of information I was interested in. Thanks, Hamish! This is a great help. I don't yet have a PC, but should I consider dispensing with the belt while wearing an Argyll?
Basically, Blu, if you are wearing just the Argyll jacket then a belt is in order, but if you are also wearing a waistcoat the belt should be left off. Whether day or evening dress is being worn, it's best to leave off the belt if you're wearing a waistcoat - the appearance is just too cluttered and untidy. A jacket alone is usually worn unbuttoned and so, the kilt waistband being visible, the appearance is hugely improved by the wearing of a belt.
It IS 'rules' (which you might chose to ignore), but it's also a matter of the visual image, and looking good!

Thanx Hamish. I,for one, think it better to follow rules and understand them before breaking them.

I really like your dress sporran Blu. I've wanted one for a while, but they're so darn expensive. Where did you get yours from?

I too have wanted one for a long time. I picked it up locally from a British Isles shop. The store had just been taken over by new owners and they didn't even have a box for it. It was exactly what I was looking for. I paid roughly $225 U.S. Of course I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that I should get a new kilt to go with it.

As Bubba has replied tgake it to a shoe leather place or down the road to me as I just purchased a walking foot industrial sewing machine to handle the leather work better. I'd be happy to sew it up for you
Cheers

Thanks Robert. Now that sounds like a serious sewing machine! You'll want to keep track of your fingers when using that one. I'll touch base with you over the next day or so.
cheers.
