This is exactly the type of information I was interested in. Thanks, Hamish! This is a great help. I don't yet have a PC, but should I consider dispensing with the belt while wearing an Argyll?
Basically, Blu, if you are wearing just the Argyll jacket then a belt is in order, but if you are also wearing a waistcoat the belt should be left off. Whether day or evening dress is being worn, it's best to leave off the belt if you're wearing a waistcoat - the appearance is just too cluttered and untidy. A jacket alone is usually worn unbuttoned and so, the kilt waistband being visible, the appearance is hugely improved by the wearing of a belt.
It IS 'rules' (which you might chose to ignore), but it's also a matter of the visual image, and looking good!
