    Hi McNice,

Yes, white hose - thick and heavy white hose - is generally considered to be part of the uniform worn by (particularly) civilian pipers in a band.

It has also now become almost a 'de rigeur' part of a kilt outfit hired/rented from a supplier for a one-off event such as a wedding. It makes life easier for the supplier!! The hose, in such cases, however has to be purchased not hired.

I think you would find it very rare in Scotland for a kilt owner to buy white hose. He will have off-white possibly, and oatmeal or beige, but hardly ever pure white. They are not really considered to be "in the best possible taste"!

I do have one pair myself, but I reserve them for when I'm wearing one of my white kilts!!

Thank you Ham! Although I tend to like the "heavier" look of the black or bottle green, I agree whole heartedly with your comments on the white.

Black hose is good for washing the car. Just hook it up to the faucet and attach a nozzle and sray away. (bubba walks away whistling a tune)

See why I deferred this one to Hamish?!

I personally think that we ought to have a whole section set aside just for outfit inquiries... FOR HAMISH!!!

HAM EYE FOR THE KILTED GUY.

Ham, as much as I completely respect your opinions, you would have a heart attack if you saw what I have to wear onstage. It goes totally against the "Book of Hamish". I would feel guilty, except that I get paid to do it!!

    Jimmy, a couple of points:

First: Our good, but sadly late, friend Tom Manuel tried what you are now proposing over at Tom's Café but, in practice, it did not work out as I simply did not have the time to log on with any regularity. Besides, most of what I suggest or recommend, is nothing more than common sense sprinkled with good taste and a dash of years of experience!

Second: Stage 'costumes' are one thing and street/home wear is something else! I have had to wear some odd outfits when giving dancing displays with the RSCDS over the years - outfits I would never dream of wearing off stage. So, you are exonerated.
