    Is "Brigadoonery" ever appropriate?

Some time ago, I was browsing the internet when I had occasion to visit the Chiholm's of Inverness website. They were advertising a peculiar waistcoat best described ad a green tweed, sleeveless Sherriffmuir jacket.

Chisholm's appears to have discontinued this product, but now I find this advertised on the MacKenzie-Frain site:

Now this is obviously not "traditional" highland attire, and I'm doubtful that there is a historical precedent for such an article. Nevertheless, I find myself wondering if there is ever an occasion when such a garment would be "appropriate".

Perhaps a performer in a band in a pub setting? Perhaps a teller of tales entertaining a crowd at the games?

When, if ever, would you consider this to be "just the thing"?

Looks like Renn Faire attire to me? Especially if it was worn with a puffy, lace-up collar, pseudo-Jacobite shirt.

That being said, I seem to recall an Xmark's member from Scotland (Pour1malt) whose wedding party had some guys in those kind of vests. He himself has a similar jacket, but with slit sleeves. I have seen these called "swordsman" vests and jackets...

Have worn similar at cèilidhs where dress code was 'smart casual'. Hate that phrase because the host seems to be saying 'no ties' but obviously expects better than a t-shirt. Oh and just try to get clarification from this sort of host. It's like trying to find out what a politician believes in!

KD, I believe such an outfit would be fine in either of the venues you suggested.

For once I might actually be with Jock.

Some things that are passed off as original and ancient garments by some of the sellers both online and around parts of Edinburgh are questionable. Costumes from Brigadoon the Movie were down to a lady named Irene Sharaff. I cannot comment upon any stage production.

But the kilt is a versatile garment that goes well with many things and nobody has to wear anything they do not like.

Those are big at the ren-fairs around here. I don't hate them, but I wouldn't pay money to wear one. The closest I get to that look is when I am fencing kilted. I throw on one of my fair-deal-more-correct-than-that shirts from my circa 1650 English kit with my lace up doublet sans laces. That is paired with either a great kilt or a modern one (if I'm just horsing around with friends). It is certainly not historical so far as I have found, but when accuracy or adherence to "traditional" style isn't a big deal it does well enough. Besides, it's comfortable and my wife likes it.
