By putting the 1/4 inch soles on the ones that I made, I think that they would wear well on hard surfaces. When walking on paved surfaces, the Dr Sholes (sp?) inserts that I put in them make them feel like your walking on marsh mellows.
It's interesting how comfortable they are, and two full days on paved surfaces didn't seem to have much affect on the leather.
I have made several pair. As I do French and Indian War reenacting, I generally wear buckle shoes. These are a great change and quite comfortable if you use an inner sole. I have felt inner soles. Several people use leather or a piece of sheep skin.

I got a pair of ancient ghillies at a Ren Faire that I really like. They look, at least to my inexperienced eye, to be fairly historically accurate. As far as no arch support, I go with admittedly anachronistic Dr. Scholl's arch supports. They work rather nicely.
