Help! Images for a publication
There is a nice looking and affordable booklet style Clan history available for many clans by the same publisher including one for Clan Donald. Unfortunately, the book is full of errors and inaccuracies about the clan history so I've decided to write a Clan history for sale at our clan tent that would not lead my kinsfolk astray.
I don't anticipate a problem writing the abridged Clan history but what I'm worried about is licensing rights for the images a booklet like this will require to be useful.
I anticipate that I would need images of:
The various clan tartans
The clan crests
The chiefs' coats of arms
pictures of Clan Donald castles
Famous portraits of Clan Donald chiefs like the young boys, Glengarry etc...
Probably the MacIan and MacLeay photos that relate to our Clan.
Graves of MacDonald chiefs at Iona
Finlaggan Island
This booklet may grow into a proper book at some stage, but one step at a time.
I see a lot of these in other books and so I imagine licensing wouldn't be prohibitive, but I'm out of my depth on that aspect. Anyone who can help me acquire rights to images of this nature inexpensively would earn my deepest gratitude.

Hi Nathan,
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page
Use the search function at the top right of the page; go to the image; check the copyright. The vast majority in Commons are copyright free, provided you quote and credit the source.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scottish_clan
Very bottom of the page will give links to the clans you seek.
Good luck with your venture.

Hey Nathan,
I'm sure you could take some nice pictures of your own tartan kilts (Various clan tartans)
The clan crests (I seem to remember are copyrighted by gaelic themes, maybe ask them/The Wizard might know better)
The Chiefs arms, ask the chief?
For the rest, maybe some Xmarkers have what you need.
If I had what you need I would happily give them to you, unfortunately I don't.
The problem with the pictures that are "creative commons" is, that they are not to be used commercially. At least that is how I understand "creative commons".
Anyway, I wish you good luck and I would enjoy to see the finished book

Nathan, I have some pictures of Castle Tioram on Loch Moidart from our anniversary trip to Scotland. I'd be more than happy to share them with you. Of course, a couple of them have some idiot standing in the foreground.

Sounds like a fine idea. If you would like, I'd be happy to take some photos for you in and about Armadale and Sleat, if you wish. The place can be pretty quiet out of season and shots without people in them are easily achieved. Frankly, the Castle itself isn't much to write home about, but the Gardens have been lovely in the past.
The current management of the Clan Donald Trust, which now controls all of the remaining 20,000 acres of the old Clan land can be quite tetchy and, shall we say "delicate" these days. Famously, Lord Godfrey MacDonald of MacDonald, the current High Chief, has nothing to do with the CDLT. He walked away publicly in high dudgeon several years ago. If you don't already have his direct contact details, I know where I can get them for you.
Best of luck with the project, Nathan.

Was he the one that tried to sell the Cuillin to fund his leaky roof?
I wasn't much of a fan of his after that.

In fairness to Lord MacDonald, it was the old MacLeod Chief who tried to flog the Cuillin to fix his roof. They never sold after an huge local stoochie over whether or not he actually owned them and/or had the Right to sell them.
The Skye dynamics between Dunvegan and Armadale remain interesting. The battle for the tourist's cash rumbles on, thankfully bloodlessly. I think.
Humm... now there's a thought... enough with this new fangled Bannockburn Virtual Battle experience. (Where the English can actually win.) Perhaps, the MacLeod's and MacDonald's are missing a trick by not staging real battles over the buns, burgers and tat in the Gift Shops?
