Can we define THCD?

As a suggestion, how about putting up a picture and disecting it, so to speak? For eample we have had Steve's "three musketeers" picture currrently on another thread. Steve thinks one way, others think another ---- a prime example then, of a divergance of inturpretation. It is absolutely not a question of right or wrong, it is though, an illustration that people do look at a picture and see very different things . OK this could turn into a pantomine and end in disaster of "oh yes it is" and "oh no its not", but worth a try? I think so, as we do have willing and wise heads at work here. Easy to resolve? Almost certainly not!

So OK we could criticise the height of the kilts,white/off white hose, windsock flashes, but actually a pretty normal THCD sight at any gathering of kilted gentlemen. Remember we are not talking Brigade of Guards here, we are talking about normal civilian people with kilts that are too small, too large, borrowed, hired and perhaps the picture was taken at the end of the day when the kilts tend to have "moved South", personal flair and so on. Yes I am happy with both pictures being THCD based on what I can see.

In addition to the hodden grey London or Toronto Scottish kilts, I'd make a couple more.

The kilt is *typically* tartan although tweed kilts and solid coloured kilts have a long history and are occasionally worn with THCD.

Is it worth making a distinction between THCD and impeccably worn THCD? Is someone that has all the necessary items on but they are ill-fitting or improperly worn, still wearing THCD? I'd say yes, just not the best example of it. What say you?

This looks like an excellent thread and if it's still going when I get back from Maxville, I'll jump in again. For now, it's off to the Glengarry Highland Games to wear my THCD with pride.

Excellent questions you raise, Nathan. Excellent topic of discussion too, David.

Like Nathan, I too will jump in again at a later time, but for now, that's me off to the pub to celebrate the arrival of the weekend and my clan's annual gathering and rally taking place in the central Scottish Highlands as we speak. Enjoy the games, Nathan! Take as many photos as you can. There's no doubt in my mind that you will be wearing your traditional Highland Dress with pride!

This is interesting. I suppose it is part and parcel of an online community like XMarks that we are going to get acronyms for things and names for others. I generally do not like these, I do not call a kilt a tank for example and would rather say Traditional Highland Civilian Dress than THCD. I suppose I am just a traditionalist at heart. I do think it is important to have a general guide as to what Traditional Highland Civilian Dress really is. Should we perhaps look to Scotty Thompson? Maybe but I think we would be better to define this ourselves so as we are talking about clothing lets name what is and what isn't Traditional Highland Civilian Dress.

As an example I will use this photo for Traditional Highland Civilian Dress:


We are both wearing:
1. 8 yard knife pleated kilts hand sewn
2. Kilt Hose (Mine from House of Cheviot Nathan died his that colour)
3. Garters or Flashes (Mine are garters Nathan was wearing flashes)
4. sgian dubhs (Both were home made)
5. Tattersall shirts (Mine was purchased at Marshalls not sure where Nathan got his)
6. Regimental ties (mine is an ABF tie Nathan's is from his Regiment I believe)
7. Tweed Argyll jackets (both were ebay finds)
8. Balmoral bonnets and Clan bucklers. (mine in silver Nathan's in pewter)
9. Sporrans (mine was a hand me down from my dad, Nathans was one he made at least he turned it into a full mask)
10. We are each carrying Crommachs (I borrowed this one from Nathan as mine is still on the way back to me)

I think the photo gives a pretty good example of THCD but it is not the only way to go, many of these accessories are personal choices and do not I think define THCD. We were just about the only two guys dressed as such with the others wearing everything from a tshirt and a kilt to wearing a P.C. and everything in between.
