And after all you don't have be McKinnon to come to these conclusions - also today.
All the people over the world won't buy their kilts just for their cupboards.

If my only choice is to make a fool of myself by wearing my kilt in Scotland I will be pleased to do so!
I am quite sure that you will not make a fool of yourself Tom. If you are heading Fort William way, then perhaps we can meet for a wee dram?

I would like to adjust that I had no intention to doubt the scottish education system!
My remark was just a humorous sign of astonishment.
(I often heard about the typical british humor...a phantom?)

But as the - I hope also in Scotland - well known german poet (we usually call him Dichterfürst) Johann Wolfgang von Goethe said:"It is not important to have a good thought for the first time but to think it again and again" (Hope my translation is not too poor...sorry, the german education system...)

But to be serious again there are some negative mechanisms in the thinking concerning tradition - by the way all over the world - which can be and have to be diguised and declined. McKinnon thinks very logical and makes the only possible conlusions in my opinion.
Generosity and serenity are good mentors in any case.

And after all wearing the kilt means acknowledge scottish tradition in the most obvious way. It would be pity to get the feeling the "natives" could consider us non-Scots unworthy to do so.

[WARNING: I tend to be humorous also in serious matters!!!]

No, the committee of five have not heard of J. W, von Goethe either! Sorry.

Tom, if you want to wear the kilt just do it! Enjoy it for a piece of comfortable clothing, or something----mind the midgies though!! But please do not expect all/some/of the Scots to think that you are acknowledging Scottish traditions. Sorry.

Mhh... I reject to accept, Mr Speaker

But I hope we'll have fun.

I suppose we won't have the occasion to come to Fort William, but thanks.

    Next time?

    Tom

Going back to a topic from a ways back - when a one color kilt or anything other than traditional kit is worn it is usually met with quiet derision - and rightly so. Here is an example of non-traditional wear that deserves derision - and not necessarily Quiet:

Hahaha! And I kind of like it! Even if it is over the top. I only think I'd wear that if I paired the kilt with a "Great White Hunter" costume. lol

Yeah, or a Darth Vader mask. Come to think of it, I've saved a pic somewhere of a man wearing a kilt and a Darth Vader mask, playing the bagpipes while riding a unicycle! Talk about over the top!!

While few scots wear it in Scotland, on the contrary some tend to wear it more abroad (?) at least for football matches.
by the way yesterday I saw a scot (according to his accent) with his family in semi formal dress in Britanny at a fair.
It seems contradictory to me to wear it more abroad than in Scotland
