Sudbury Hall, nr. Ashbourne, Derbyshire

Last Sunday my wife and I visited Sudbury Hall, which is not far from Ashbourne in Derbyshire. Anyone thinking of visiting the Ashbourne Highland Gathering in future years should bear it in mind for a visit at the same time. It has a Museum of Childhood, which although it does have items from the 1800's, also contained many items from our childhood which ages one somewhat!

Originally constructed by George Vernon it is particularly noted for its ceilings, staircase paintings, this one actually painted on the plaster wood carving by Grinling Gibbons and Long Gallery which with other areas has appeared in film and television productions and contains some interesting exhibits the latter being a depiction of Noah. The building itself has some very intricate brickwork though the library had to be reconstructed by the National Trust as it had been amalgamated into another room at some stage in its history The stables and other outbuildings were later additions and now house the Museum, shops and cafe, outside which we relaxed in the sun with a cup of tea at the end of our visit.

A tip for anyone considering joining the National Trust in the UK, join the National Trust for Scotland. For us it cost less than ½ the cost of doing it in England, but gives us access to all English National Trust properties and car parks as well as Scottish ones free.

Exquisite art and artifacts. Beautiful pictures. I would love to spend time there someday. I have only seen it before in my favorite movie rendition of "Pride and Prejudice". Thanks for posting the pics.

Nice one I was there last week with the kids in my kilt. Couldn't get my son in his but it was a great day. Glad the sun was out for you .
