Arthur's Seat. As you have transport you can drive around the back and go up the easy way. You can soak up the Festival atmosphere and shows and maybe your son might enjoy the ghost tours at night which go from St Giles Cathedral.
Holyrood is interesting and ties in well with school history.

You can't go wrong with the World Pipe Band Championships on Glasgow Green on Fri/Sat the 15/16th. Over 225 Bands from all over the World. An experience not to be missed.

Also, the Piping Live Festival is going on all week. Here's a link to the programme...

    Have fun!

The best thing in Edinburgh is the train to Glasgow.
    I'd agree with Orionson.
Get yourself to Glasgow and see some of the piping events.
Also visit Glasgow's vibrant waterfront, beautiful parks and magnificent architecture.
Museums such as the Riverside Museum of Transport, Kelvingrove Art Gallery and the Hunterian Museum at Glasgow University are all fairly close to each other in the west end and admission is free.
If you don't fancy the train you can get there on the M8 on your own vehicle or express bus.

This link to the Bo'ness Motor Museum has links to other central Scotland attractions such as the Falkirk Wheel, Stirling Castle, Bannockburn. Also Myreton Museum in Aberlady.

The Castle! Or is that so obvious that it's not been mentioned. I didn't get to the Camera Obscura last time, and it's on my to-do list for my next visit. http://www.camera-obscura.co.uk/
