Mixing Scot and Native American Cultures

Jazzed by a conversation with the Navajo Lady who repaired my UK hem a couple weeks ago (she'd visited Scotland, loved kilts, and we had a delightful conversation comparing cultures - both oppressed, conquered, had traditional practices, language, and dress prohibited by conquerers).

So I'm surfing the web looking for Pendleton Vests (another addiction) and found a very beautiful Pendleton Jacket with black leather sleeves in a Native American design from Kraff's up in Washington State.

Went ahead and ordered one to wear with my black leather UK when it arrives.

Hoping the look will work. A blend of similar cultures.

There is quite a history of the Scots & the First Nations, Riverkilt...from the Metis in Canada, to the Orkneymen who worked for the Hudson's Bay Company and the Scots fur traders of the North West Company, Scots have always indentified with the Nations.

Another good book is "Scottish Highlanders, Indian Peoples", by James Hunter, about the MacDonald family and their relationship with the Nez Perce Tribe in Montana.

Aye Padre, Have a book on the McDonald's intermarrying with the Natives in Montana...can't recall the title.

Thanks for the referral to the other two. Work with Navajo people daily. Not sure they care, but it helps me.

I think the jacket may be a bit too much with a tartan kilt, but nice with a single colour modern kilt.I had wondered about wearin' my mocassin boot(short) with a kilt.
also thought about the longer boots too, the ones same length as kilt sox

That's the Hunter book, "Scottish Highlanders, Indian Peoples", also titled "Glencoe and the Indians" in Scotland.

I am not a "real" Padre, but I am a sub-deacon and Lay Eucharistic Minister in the Episcopal Church.

One of my fellow parishoners is a member of a Franciscan order that has a mission in the Navajo nation -- our Scottish society raised money one year so Bro. Francis Mary could buy winter coats for the mission children. We used to go to San Xavier Del Bac outside of Tucson on the Tohono Odham (Pima) Reservation -- very sad, but also very proud -- I have a great deal of respect for the First Nations.

I had to get something a little more "Renny" when we performed at the Renaissance Faires... and the Minnetonka High boots were perfect! In fact, I saw a LOAD of the regulars in them. They not only look great with any kilt (plain, tartan) but they're comfortable as h_ll.

I can highly recommend them from experience!

Another thing that a person could do is what the Black Watch and other Scottish Regiments did in the French & Indian War: wear wool leggings under their kilts -- the leggings, usually in blue, red or green, was something they picked up from the French and Native Americans -- Stuart Reid's Osprey book "18th Century Highlanders" show a Scot in this variant, wearing traditional mocassins.

I have a Native American leather vest that I wear with my casual kilts. In my opinion the designs are very to period Scots.

I also think that this is another opportunity to present the North American Scot, as he was.

I have a photo of Waldo McIntosh who was simultaneously hereditary chief of the Creek Nation tribe and President of Clan McIntosh in the US. His great-grandfather was chief William McIntosh, who came over from Scotland and married a Creek Nation princess.

Anway, the picture is great- this old guy wearing a full feather headdress, red & black McIntosh tartan kilt, horsehair sporran and a beadwork kilt belt, with a white dress shirt and black necktie.
I'll scan it one of these days.
