I am sure that the Scots athlete is justly proud of representing his country. Nevertheless, it is still not possible to "make a silk purse out of a sow's ear" as far as the team tartan is concerned.

Gentlemen, gentlemen (and ladies), I am sorely disappointed by the general reaction.
I am in full agreement with Galloglaigh and McClef. The tartan is fresh and unstuffy, just right for a team of sporting youngsters (most of them).
I liked the blue material used for the shirts and dresses. There were some comments that they looked rather gay on the men – and while the use of that word was intended negatively, I think it is very apt when used in the old-fashioned sense.
I liked the tartan even more. But what I liked most of all was the brown used for the sporrans, shoes and hose.
Okay, so Scots don’t generally wear brown. But it is a colour I am used to (in various shades), and it suits the outfit as a whole.
In fact the capacious sporrans drew my attention quite sharply. I would love to own one!
Of course the Games are mostly over (although I gather there are events still ongoing), but personally I feel that in years to come, this design will be looked back on as being ground-breaking.
I was slightly less happy with the tartan for the staff/volunteers, but it looked well in the girls’ dresses and in the men’s outfits, although I found the plain blue kilts a little strange.
There were a few posts on the first couple of pages of this thread to which I wanted to add an “Aye”, but for some reason the function was disabled. It returned for the latter pages.

After 11 attempts to register here under different names, we now have enough evidence to confirm that this is again Steven Aikens of Jasper AL. This time using an IP proxy in an attempt to hide his real location.

I think that really was the intention - to be eye-catching, colorful, dramatic, and fun.

The designer didn't design it for the general public to adopt or wear as a fashion tartan. It was designed for a specific event that related to young people engaging in sport, and was designed to be seen from a distance by onlookers - hence its simple and bright design.

Not the colors I would have chosen, but I can understand the rationale behind it. It's not a clan tartan, or a district tartan, or any sort of a permanent tartan meant to span generations. It was just a colorful design meant for a passing event, with no intention or suggestion that anyone else (besides the participants) should wear it.

I also found it interesting that the designer obviously intended to steer clear of both the militaristic influence and the class divide that are evident in traditional highland dress.

I thought it showed kilt and tartan wearing to be something that's contemporary and fresh. That in itself is a plus in my book.

Lodroriqdzin...Thanks for posting the youtube clip. I can understand the comments re. an attempt to make it "showy" for tv, however the athletes wearing any kilt would have accomplished this (and the athletes would have something they were proud to wear afterwards). Also being somewhat of a traditionalist, I would have like to have seen then wear a kilt belt in matched to their tan sporrans.
