And an excellent post it is Nathan. Many thanks to you and Colin for taking the time and effort to create it. Now, however, to be fair to the modernists (?) on this site we need someone to do the same for that way of wearing the kilt.

By means of comparison, trying to define what is traditional non-military unit highland style wear would be akin to asking a cowboy in any state of the western U.S. what is the proper type of headgear for any cowboy to wear, what are the crucial components of tack with which to equip all horses and riders, etc. It depends on the time of year, the purpose, the personal preference, and a range of experience which may date back several generations as to what worked the best in similar applications in the past. While one will notice regional similarities, and a few of what others would characterize as standardization, it is ALL DIFFERENT! Dress and equip yourself to most efficient utility for the time, place and condition, and adjust and balance according to your individual tastes. But it appears that some folks like to debate, and offer their opinions. Do what you feel is best for you, and let the rest sort themselves out.

Wear what you like, what after all makes it "Traditional" ? Do we simply mirror historical references, or apply highland dress to today's values. It's nice to have a guide, but really it all comes down to what each individual feels is right for them, otherwise we'd all look exactly the same, by some "experts" definition of what is and is not correct. I must beg to differ here, I really do think Nathan and Colin have been able to herd the cats and have indeed come up a definition of Traditional Kilt Wear. If you have not had a chance look at the wonderful thread they put together here:

Speaking of cat herders, clearly the fellow in this cartoon would be doing better at it if he was wearing THCD... or at least he'd look better than wearing a bathrobe And he'd be more comfortable if he had a traditional cromach to lean on instead of the Shepard's Crook that isn't doing him much good.
