US size 5 (3.5 mm). Worsted weight 100% wool yarn I picked up from a local source (or maybe Lion Brand Fisherman - my left-over yarn stash is a bit disorganized). Cast on eight stitches. 30 inches long.
I'm going to do a second pair using size 4 and the same yarn. I'll probably experiment with other yarns.
