If a person's measurements require that the pleats taper in the fell, it might not even be possible to pleat to the stripe using either of the pivots, because the taper might cause vanishing stripes and "spear points" along the edges of the pleats (this, of course, depends on the size of the pleats relative to the sett size). This is not a problem with version 1.

I strongly recommend that someone do an analysis from a kiltmaker's perspective for the near-final version using the actual sett size before committing to an order. I'd be more than happy to do that for the group, if you want.
Barb thank you for the offer I think that would be brilliant.

Barb has worked up a fantastic pleating guide to both of McMurdo's tartans, which will help in making a good decision. I will ask her to consider theyoungkiltmans tartan as well.

The Facebook group has grown at an astonishing rate, though it's probably slowed. We now have members and Clan admins from most of the Clans Chattan on board as well as a bevy of artists, conservationists, X Markers and so on.

SO....if Paul does not weigh in with his opinion this Thursday or Friday, then next week we'll have a vote. I'm going to allow the FB group to vote too, and I will combine the results from X Marks and FB into one big tally.

I wonder Barb, if the "Grey tartan" could be knife pleated to the sett? This is more of an academic pleating question than anything else.

Sorry that I didn't clarify. Either of the variants could be pleated to the sett - I just didn't do examples because it would look just like the sett. The gray variant would be easy to pleat to the sett. The brown variant could be more of a challenge - it has so many little stripes that some of them might be lost in the pleat taper from hip to waist. That depends, of course, on the size of the pleats and the taper.

Thank you Barb. Pleating to the sett is standard over here in Scotland and unless one expressly asks the kiltmaker NOT to pleat to the sett then, to the sett it usually is. I suspect that few kilt owners over here would even know that these choices exist, anyway!

theyoungkiltman has graciously removed his design from the decision-making process. This leaves us with McMurdo's two variants. Variant #1 "Brown"... and Variant #2 aka "Jock Scot" or "Grey".

Thanks, theyoungkiltman for your input. You've been an avid participant in the process from the very beginning and I appreciate it!

McMurdo has developed an alternative brown tartan, which he did by basically swapping the gray and the brown in the "Jock Scot" Variant #2. He's calling it the "Weathered Jock Scot" variant.

I don't know, Jock....do you feel a bit "weathered" these days? Perhaps a bit more than, say thirty years ago?
Maybe this should be the "Hunting Jock Scot" variant, except that implies that people wearing the tartan are out, hunting Jock! That's going to be difficult, I suspect that Jock is a wily woodsman!

If you want to see it, you'll have to take a look at the Facebook group!
