    chattan tartan

Is the sett size on the chattan ancient tartan bigger than the modern? Or are they the same large sett size?

Ancient, Modern etc are shade terms and have no bearing on sett size. Any colourway could be sized from a tie to a carpet. That said, different weavers tend to favour slightly different 'standard' sett sizes so Clan Chattan woven by 'A' may well be a slightly different size to that woven by 'B' and that woven by 'C' different again.

I think much depends on the mill who weaves the tartan. As far as stock ranges of the Chattan tartan are concerned, it appears that Lochcarron's Chattan tartan in the ancient colour scheme (which is the only Chattan variant they offer) has the largest sett I've seen. Of course, when going the custom weave route (D.C. Dalgliesh), one could enlarge the sett size accordingly.

For example, my next kilt order will be a custom weave in the Chattan Clan tartan in the reproduction colour scheme woven by D.C. Dalgiesh. I'm planning to have the sett enlarged slightly, but not to the extent where it will substantially decrease the number of pleats for a standard, 8-yard kilt when pleated to the sett. This is my preference. The colour scheme I've selected has no bearing on how large the sett size will be. As Peter mentioned, this is entirely up to the weaver. And in my case; a combination of the weaver (D.C. Dalgliesh), myself, and my kilt-maker (Barb Tewksbury).

Lochcarron has a 10 in sett size. Is that too big in your honest opinions?

No, not at all. I think it looks fantastic in kilt form. Perhaps anything larger would look too big, or could potentially run into pleating issues.

The pleating issues were what I was worried about mainly. I think it looks fine too. I am having it box pleated to the stripe.
