I'll try to re-iterate the most important things about choosing a machine for making kilts.

It's not the machine that is important. It is much more important knowing how a kilt is put together and what it should look like when finished!

Yes, you can sew a kilt on almost any machine. Old Treadle with one stitch or your mom's old home machine. Even one of the new computerized machines with 5,00 special stitches designed for quilting.

Learn how to use your machine properly.....
Learn how to take care of your machine....
Learn how to make a kilt that looks good when worn....

    Then just start sewing.

If you are planning on buying a machine to make kilts then sure, look for one that can raise the pressure foot real high. But that is only if you are planning on making the type of kilts where you will be sewing through 1/2" or more of fabric. it is not the strength of the machine. Almost any machine will push a needle through 1/2" of fabric but not all will fit that much fabric under the pressure foot.

A traditional style kilt can be made very successfully on almost any machine.

Just get sewing and don't sweat the small stuff. (what's small stuff you may ask? Well, if it won't kill you, it's small stuff.)
