Reviving this due to getting this postcard!

A 'dress Argyll' of a different sort! Not having silk lapels, but having the button loops on the cuffs, and the epaulettes, of contrasting lace/braid (probably silver 'Russia braid').
I've seen Argylls like that being sold by Geoffrey Tailor in Edinburgh, very nice, navy blue or Archer Green Argylls with silver or gold "Russia braid" button loops on the cuffs and pocket flaps.

Another informative an educational thread!
In multicultural Canada, dress codes have myriad influences. Attempting to conform to the norm can be a bit confusing, as Nathan's post regarding various wedding attire attests. What we seem to be going through in general, though, is a reduced or minimalist mode of style. We even see national leaders in luxurious suits with open shirts without ties; a bit of a dress code travesty . To me, for example, business casual in our regiment was (and to me always will be) jacket and tie. I have been mentioned by others as overdressed at such events now. I simply state that I am not. I take to Jock's comments then that highland dress also has its code, which deserves some respect apart from Saxon dress. As long as one is properly attired as called for at the event, regardless of national origin it can't be improper. Wear it confidently.

I recently found another perfect time for the black Argyll: when you're loaning someone your Prince Charlie! ;)

I'll be piping at my son's mother-in-law's memorial service on Saturday afternoon. I'll be wearing my black argyll for that. My day jackets--a horizon blue, two-button argyll, an ancient blue argyll and a brown tweed argyll--seem to me a bit too frivolous for the occasion, while my black PC and my green velvet montrose are just too formal for the event.

For I am not such a fan of Prince Charlie jackets - I don't like the short cut very much - I appreciate my Argyll also for dress(ier) occasions.
It seems as if the Argyll lost some of it's formality during the times.
I really like the picture with the low cut waistcoat and white tie...never thought of it.
In his book Tartans and Highland Dress MacKinnon recommends it to be worn with black tie or jabot.
So I tend to wear mine for formal day events and also semi formal and formal evening events.

Had to add this one...
Even though I recently posted it on another thread, I figured I had to add this pic here is support of my post above.

A couple of distinguished gentleman, for certain. For me, the tartan waistcoat elevates the argyle for this occasion.

An absolutely smashing outfit, Nathan! Well, done, sir. I wish I had a reasonable excuse to take my kilt outfit to that level... fo' shizzle!

Glad to see this thread has been resurrected. I will have to go back and review all the posts. I just received a black Argyll with Braemar cuffs that I had bid on e-bay. It is a lovely jacket, and now I am disappointed to hear that perhaps it will not be very versatile - or at least not as much as I thought.
My questions... because of it's level of formality, must it always be worn with a white shirt? Coloured shirt? Would pattern work? And I have already seen both long ties and bow ties...so that answers that.
I still may wear it on my next appearance at Tartan Tuesday, just to show it off.

I think a plain white shirt shows off the outfit---and yourself--- to best advantage. A very, very pale(light blue) plain coloured shirt may work on rare occasion, but I cannot see where a patterned shirt would be appropriate with a BBSBA.
