I'd say, if someone were to purchase ONE jacket, it would probably be a dark tweed crail/argyll/braemar or a solid color like Navy blue or charcoal. This is assuming that the fellow in question doesn't attend black tie events on a regular basis. If you add in a matching waistcoat with the crail/argyll/braemar then you notch up the dressiness factor to "three-piece-suit" level which covers an awful lot of ground.
