A tartan for the King of Monsters
Due to a recent awakening as to the number of Godzilla fans here on X-marks, some members (including myself) on here think that it is time for a Gojira tartan. This site has a couple of tartan designs under it's belt so far, so why not one more? I'm sure that there will be some who will not see the value in a tartan to celebrate a giant radio active dinosaur; but this thread is for those of us who do. Of course this will be an unofficial tartan, and may or may not be registered. Either way this should be a lot of fun.
I started playing with the Scotweb designer and came up with this.

It was designed based on a few Godzilla-nerdy points. First: The primary color of this is charcoal grey (midnight grey and denim blue) which is the color of Godzilla himself in all but two movies. There are three grey stripes broken up by a gold over check. These lines have a width of thirty; that is the number of movies Godzilla is in excluding the 1998 travesty. Second: There are two dark green stripes (also with a width of thirty) because of the two movies in which he is green (Godzilla 2000: millennium, Godzilla VS Megaguirus). Also to honor the fact that in nearly all but the most recent American marketing and franchise items (the Hanna Barbera cartoon , Marvel Comics, early toys, posters, etc.), Godzilla is shown as green. Third: There is also a blue line for the color of his radioactive breath.

Wow, odd coincidence! today at work I had a couple movies I had playing as background noise as I worked.... First one was Godzilla raids again, second was Godzilla vs mechagodzilla.
I'm interested in a Gojira tartan for sure!

One thought on the grey color, isn't that because the movies were black and white? I think he was always green, we just couldn't tell on screen.

That's a common misconception due to the attempts to make him more familiar to the western world. The early posters that depict him as being green also show his breath as orange fire and not the blue. I guess they thought that a fire drake was easier to sell over here. According to the Toho website as well a thorough viewing of all of the films, the suit used is charcoal grey. The exceptions are the two mentioned above. There are only a couple of the films that are black and white; Godzilla/Gojira (1954), and the immediate sequel, Godzilla Raids Again (1955, 1959USA). In both of those movies the suit was grey and it continued as such until 1999 with Godzilla 2000. My step dad is a film buff with a special interest in B movies.

Seeing the great Gojira tartan you've designed got me thinking about other movie tie-in tartans. I was thinking with the popularity of Superhero Films in recent years it would be cool to see some tartans designed for those movies too.
I was playing about a bit with the STA Tartan Designer App and came up with start for an Iron Man tartan.

It still needs some fine tuning (perhaps a little darker overall? More yellow?)
I might try my hand at some other Superheros (Batman, Spiderman etc.) and see what I can come up with.

ScottishStuart, I'd try materials that depict the kilted Hero more in line with his or her illustrated persona. For example: metallic acrylic for an Iron Man tartan, spandex for Spiderman, Kevlar for Batman, etc. It would be fun for the audience and owner alike. The real task is a Dracula tartan that doesn't creep one out.

Tarheel, that's a very interesting thought, changing the material to reflect the character! I'm still working through a few more heroes, I'll post them all at the end.
