Solid Color or Tartan Tie?

I've said this before in another thread. I have only three ties which I actually wear:-

A black bow tie (for formal events)
A black necktie (for funerals)
A university tie (for everything else)

Does my university tie match everything I wear with it? No, probably not, but that's not the point.

I'm not opposed to matching tartan ties, or flashes, but I think a tartan tie should have a waistcoat between the kilt and the tie.
