The US is very diverse, so one cannot say that "in the US yada yada yada.... because what goes in one place may not go elsewhere .
Having said that, I told you folks a while back, that once my wife accepts it, I would be bold as a lion and go anywhere I please kilted and that is exactly what I do. If I can be kilted I am and I don't care what anyone else thinks about it.
I will be an ambassador for the Kilt! Period.
Rememder to get it accepted as norm you have to ...
