For a long time I have wanted a belted plaid / great kilt and with winter already here in Niigata I found a fantastic red based tartan in double width and purchased 4.5 mtrs of it for making my plaid. On advice of a full time belted plaid wearer I hand sewed into the inside 17 belt loops ( what a mission as it took me a week to complete in my spare time ) and threaded a nice 1.5 mtr length of Japanese woven belt through it. It certainly makes it easy to put on as there is no need to pleat it each time and the whole plaid can hang on a peg or coat hanger ready to grab and put on. I also use a wide leather belt as well of course. While I was at it I made a new pair of moggans as well which turned out pretty nice. I wear long hiking knickerbocker socks turned down and put the footless moggans of the top and tie them up with some braid. Today was my first time out wearing it as I had to do some shopping up the street and it certainly is very warm. Plus there is plenty of fabric to pull up over my shoulders when it gets really cold. I need to tidy up the pleats a bit at the back , but this is the style of plaid I was looking for which is something I can easy put on to keep me warm for winter.
