Question: Mountain Hardwear Elkommando Kilt Sizing

For those of you who own the Elkommando Kilt by Mountain Hardwear, can you tell me about the sizing? In other words, are the sizes actual waist measurements (probably at the "jeans waist") or are they more like the typical jeans sizes?

I currently wear size 30 in most jeans but my true measurement in inches would be closer to 33 or 34 (I haven't gotten the tape measure out recently).... I'm still squeezing into my 8-yard wool kilt that maxes out at 33", but I don't want to get something that fits poorly.

The sizing information from http://www.mountainhardwear.com/mens...lt-OM3417.html says:

Small is for 30"-31" waist
Medium is for 32"-34" waist

There is also an indication on the website that states "Fits slightly small", but I can't go try one on to find the right size. All of the reviews on their website indicate "True Fit". One review mentions getting a size bigger, but quite honestly, even by reading reviews that mention the fit of the kilt I haven't been able to figure out what size would be best for me.

Unfortunately it appears that finding a medium may be difficult as the websites I have browsed only have small and extra small. and if a Medium is a "true measurement" and a reviewer says to get a size bigger because they fit small... you see where my mind gets hung up with sizing.

I would appreciate any input from you Elkommando wearers out there.

I own three of these kilts and they get quite a bit of use. These fit at your jeans/pants waist so I wear a 36-38 and take a Large in the kilt. This past year the one I bought was a little snugger, due to manufacturing not extra pounds, that the other two I have. From your post I would say a medium would be a good fit. Good luckl finding one, Ill explain.

All outdoor gear, especially clothing, is seasonal. This means the ElKommando kilts you see left on sites are from last spring. They have bought at a winter buying show for this coming sping sales. Retail stores only buy what they feel they can sell and manufacturing companies such as Mountain Hardwear only make what they think they will sell. When you get to the end of the season there are no more because they dont keep making them through the year. You may luck into finding a medium on Moosejaw, Mountaingear, REI or other site but I doubt it. Your best bet is to wait until spring and jump on one when it comes on the market. These have been popular enough for them to keep making them. REI sells out pretty quick but some of the web only outlets will have them longer. It is a game played by manufacturing and retail and it is a pain, I used to own an outdoor retail store, so you just hope as a consumer you will find what you are looking for. After the season your odds get slimmer and slimmer. Best of luck, the Elkommando is a great kilt to have for hiking, running, gardening, yard work.. or anythying.

For jeans and p**ts I get a 32. This morning my waist measured 33. My Elkommando kilt is a Medium and fits OK to slightly loose.

I own 2 Elkommando Kilts both in medium. I have a 32-33 waist and they just fit perfectly. I hesitated going to the large size because I didn't want any more material in the apron width or length. The beauty of these kilts is in their slim profile - great for hiking, backpacking and packing into a small place. I keep the second one folded up in my car to have it handy for a quick lunch hour or after work hike. They are super comfortable and have a nice swish. They are also great for working around the house,

Woodsman, Is that 32-33 waist your "true waist" you would use for a traditional kilt measurement (at or near the belly button), or is that your jeans/p@nts size? Sorry for my own confusion.

Sorry for not specifying. An earlier post mentioned Elkommandos being a jeans fit kilt. The 32-33 would be my jeans waist. Since the Elkommando is a snap closure, it is unforgiving of any weight gain.

I just looked back on this thread. It looks like you're on the fighting edge of this medium/large Elkommando thing. But you are about my size too, I would say. I just laid out my medium Elkmomando kilt. Snapped and laying flat the waist is 17 1/2 inches measuring in the center of waistband (there's a slight curve to the waistband). I get the same measurement on my 33 x 32 inch Levi jeans. Think of it as an incentive to maintain your waist.

That's good to know. Thanks for your responses (as well as feedback from others). I'm fighting edge of the Small-Medium right now. My wool kilt up at the true waist is pretty much maxed out at 33" (last belt notch for now)... USA Kilts says "true waist" is normally 3"-4" larger than jeans waist sizes, which holds true in my case because my 2 pair of Lucky jeans and 1 pair of American Eagle jeans are all size 30. Basic logic was telling me to get the Small 30-31 Elkommando, but I got worried that the website said "fits slightly small". I've also tried on different jeans/p@nts and found the typical inconsistent sizing and fit between different styles and brands, so I wanted to confirm experiences from people here at XMTS before biting the bullet. I do need to get back to eating healthy and exercising… which is how I was able to get into that wool kilt in the first place. If you’re wearing 33 waist jeans and the medium is good for you, I guess I should go with the small since I’m 30 waist jeans. Complicating this is my 3 pair of Banana Republic brand khakis (darn work clothes) which are 32’s, but just a tiny bit big in the waist – just slightly. I wish I could try one of these Elkommando’s on without ordering/returning. I'll keep mulling it over.

As I recall, I ordered a "small" and had to return it. With snaps there is no way to make it larger. The belt will allow you to snug it up a bit, but not much. I am just down the road in Austin, if you are in the area, stop by and try mine on. Mine is a "medium."

Thanks for the offer and advice. Not sure when I'll be in the Austin area in the future. Worst case, I'll pick a size, order, and see if whatever arrives actually fits... then go from there. Unfortunately, I may have to wait on this one since there will be a USA Kilts casual under the tree for me Thursday morning... if it arrives. Not surprisingly, USPS is a bit delayed with its delivery. The wife falls somewhere between liking and tolerating the kilt thing… but having more kilts than jeans might start making her question any further male unbifurcated garment acquisitions. A good hiking kilt would be a great addition... as well as the completely stalled X-Kilt project I barely got started. Perhaps some of my time off work next week will allow me to get that one further down the path of being completed.
