History of Full-Face Sporrans

For the traditionalists out there.... does anyone know the history of the full-face sporran? Historically (recorded history, anyway), when did they first appear? I've been doing a little "Googling", but have not really found a good answer to my question.

There's a number of 18th century portraits showing animal mask sporrans.

John, fourth Duke of Atholl, 1780 by David Allan, clearly showing a badger head sporran with six tassels exactly as worn in the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders
