As I have been laid low by a horse kicking me on the knee, I am settling down to read, for the umpteenth time, "John MacNab" by John Buchan. A lovely wee book if you are interested in deer stalking, fishing and poaching in the Highlands. It is a story that is based loosely on fact.

A little different than what others may read, "Of Ghosts and Godpoles" by Þórbeorht Línléah. Got the book a couple weeks ago and haven't had a chance to crack it open.

The wife is going out of town this weekend, so it's the perfect opportunity to read.

I got a reprieve from the legal crap of last week and am rereading "India's Love Lyrics" by Laurence Hope (1902) They are reviewed as exotic, erotic and ethnical. I hope to obtain some insight into the mind-set of the Middle Easterners passions and make sense of the world's woes.

Man With The Golden Arm by Nelson Algren.

If you saw the movie with Frank Sinatra, you really haven't seen a translation of the book. It is very dismal, very real and very Chicago.

I have found Nelson Algren to be almost too real for my taste at times, great writer though.
Currently reading Macbeth, a True Story by Fiona Watson. She does a good job of cutting through the mist of early Scottish history, setting straight the Kenneth MacAlpin story and explaining why being an early king of Scots could seriously lower ones life expectancy. Just getting to the beginning of Macbeths reign, very interesting reading.

Forgot to mention a marvellous book given to the missus and me for Christmas, South Africa’s Coasts.
It is a compilation, but what a compilation! It has pictures entered in a countrywide competition which range from vivid colour images of sea creatures to illustrations of sports in the water like surfing and kayaking, fishing (and more fishing!), plus articles written by a wide range of experts starting with Dr Sylvia Earle, the woman who singlehandedly started the ball rolling on Hope Spots – areas of coastline that offer hope for a better future with regard to the health of our oceans. There are more than half a dozen of them now, and the number is bound to grow.

And my son gave me The 100-year-old Man Who Climbed out of a Window and Disappeared – a lovely bit of escapism, but also a rehash of the events of the past 110 years and the role played in them by the titular centenarian. It is a translation from the Swedish of Hundraåringen by Jonas Jonasson, and is being made into a Swedish-language movie.

Just finished "The Candlemass Road," by George MacDonald Fraser. A brief, very well written novel that provides an interesting and slightly unsettling glimpse into life in the borders late in the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. The historical postscript is also a very good read. @Julia Elliot, thought of you as I was reading. If you haven`t read it, check it out.
