Here's what shook out. Went ahead and wore the best brace with the metal and pulled the hose over it - even managed the traditional garter tie. Here's a pic - a tad fuzzy and for sure dour, but if you check my left leg you'll see a bit of black between the bottom of the RKilt and the top of the hose. That's the brace.
Managed one dance and that was a mistake...dancing is a bit more hurtful than gimping along...

Ron.... Glad things worked out. Hope you can get rid of the brace soon!

As I am sure you are aware you boss must make reasonable accommodations for a person that has a condition that will make work difficult for them. try that approach to be allowed to wear your kilt until after the brace is no longer needed

Thanks....been through this for ten years with my current employer. Was fine for a while, when they decided to say no I filed a grievance and the CEO said, "You can wear whatever the **** you want" in a tone that made it clear that Arizona is a right to work state and my employment depends on his whims and if I don't like it good luck in court. Changed agencies for a few years, then came back - knowing his attitude. Cut my hours to 32 a week so have more of my own time to be kilted. Don't know how the brace argument would play out if I chose to try it.

Ron,
I hesitate to jump in here because this is a grey area for me, but I decided to take the plunge, with a prayer.
This is an opportunity to try a little different type of 'educating'. Find the tightest pants you own, (preferably not your favourites) and slit them up the outside of the leg so that you can put on your brace after you put the pants on. Fasten the pant leg somehow so that it doesn't flap. Make them as presentable as you can. Then wear them to work.
You haven't broken the rules, you are wearing pants. When you run out of pants, tell your boss that you have run out of pants that you can wear with your brace.
Since:
1) you are being environmentally conscious and only washing full loads, not half loads, of laundry,
2) you don't have any more pants which you can afford to cut up, and
3) you don't have the budget to buy more pants which will never be used again when you are done with the brace.
Ask if could you wear your kilt while laundry is being done.
Now, your kilts will look better than the pants. Perhaps he will see that, at least we can hope...not a permanent solution, but a baby-step.

Ron.... Retirement is great...6 Saturdays and 1 Sunday every week, or 7 kilted Fridays.
The only downside is the lack of a pay cheque, or check as it would be where you live.
Cheers...Bill
