Need help with a regimental Tartan

A customer came into the shop with a page from "The Navy and Army Illustrated" dated Jan 3 1896.

On the page is a photo of three pipers in full rig.

The caption says Pipe-Major Fraser, 1st Scots Guards.

Looking at this old black & white photo it beyond me to discern the Tartan.

The Customer is convinced that the Tartan is Stewart Royal. I'm not so sure.

Anyone know a bit more about who "1st Scots Guards" were and what Tartan their pipers may have worn?
