I agree the first time is always the hardest. Now if you want to come and do some of my yard work, kilt it up and I will provide the spirits.

So am I, but I started at 8 and you can add 60 years to that now. You may get a few double takes, but there is such a variety of well and badly dressed folks around that you will be far more aware of you than anyone else. As Norbo said, just take a trip to the supermarket and you will find most people are much to involved in what they are doing to pay any attention to you. By the way, you look great.

Ditto.
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!

The key, I think, is in your bearing. Carry yourself with your shoulders back and head high, and OWN your look with confidence.
Your body language goes a long way towards onlookers' assessment of you and your style.
(And by the way, you do look great)
Although a mate of mine at work wears only Utilikilts (I have known him for eight years and have never seen him in anything else), once my tartan kilt arrives, I, too, might be the only bloke in my town who wears one out and about as daily wear.

everything ratspike said! You get the same response regardless of where you wear it. Even in England. You will have to lose your shyness though and get comfortable with the strangers who insist on talking to you.
That said, I don't own a utility kilt, and while I wear a kilt around the house (much easier and more comfortable due to medical issues and old age) I generally limit my public kilt-wearing to hikes (I live in the country on a lake), formal occasions and sporting events. It's not that I think there is anything wrong with wearing a kilt for everyday public activities, it just wasn't the way I was brought up with a kilt and not the way my peers approached the issue.
