Thanks for the video link Shaun! If I find another skunk on my property, I might opt for a pro to handle it. Skinning an animal is messy enough without the complication of a stink gland lol.

Interesting thread (even the side-bar, up to a point).

Tenmiles, there is a third alternative to the pics posted by StevieR and the fully functioning cantle. The cantle on my sporran is only attached to the frontspiece, but the whole of the sporran is usable - certainly enough space for phone, keys and a hip flask etc. The cantle is attached by 3 small nuts and bolts, the back/mouth is fastened by a leather tab and press-stud and "bag" opens to about 2.5" to 3".

Hope this helps. Look forward to seeing the finished article(s).

    Thanks Tomo!
Diligent-enough Googling has revealed similar pictures for me, enough to help me understand how these work.

At the moment, discussions with the Groom have arrived at the point where we've agreed that he will just buy an inexpensive one of these from one of the many places which offer them, as the cost alone of a high-quality cantle places my overall cost for building the sporran at least double what he could get away with paying for a "serviceable" one for the event itself (combined with my lack of confidence in embarking on this entirely new (to me) construction, and the inevitable trial-and-error it will require to produce a worthy result) and that's a cost I don't wish to pass on to him, but which I also can't absorb, myself.

I'll still be making my own skunk sporran, with a flap closure, but I will not be fashioning the sporran which the Groom will wear to his wedding.
