Fabric sporrans?
Are there any examples of sporrans made entirely of cloth? Has it been done? I mean nice ones with metal cantels and such. Just kicking around an idea.

Harris tweed maybe but face it; fabric is boring compared to leather or fur. If you have an occupation that screams a certain choice of something...that could be fun.

I guess my only concern would be durability. I have had my 2 leather sporrans for quite some time. I would think one of fabric just would not hold up to regular use.

Stillwater Kilts made one out of nylon for a while; I don't know if it's still available or not.

I have one, but wouldn't consider it appropriate to mount a chrome cantle to.

Aside from the Stillwater, what about some sort of luxurious auld tyme fabric? Perhaps mounted to an antique stirling cantel? Just trying to figure a way to make a silk purse . . .

I fear it might start looking (more) like a purse? How about cutting out a silhouette of your sporran, put the piece of fabric behind it and the cantle in place, step back and see what you think (assuming you have materials on hand). You might be able to do something similar in photo editing if you are working with ideas.

I've actually been considering trying one in Waxed Canvas & leather. As mentioned before, you'd have to keep the shape very "sporranly", and maybe ad tassels, to make sure it looks right. Here's a duluth shell bag for a visual:

As a hiking sporran to match your rucksack I think it would be ok, but not with a chrome cantle as the OP suggested.

I've seen Rob Roy style sporrans made with waxed canvas and thought they looked very nice. Hard to say how it would look with a cantle, though I have seen cantled sporrans made with leather and tweed that looked great.
