Curious about difference between different brands
So, I'm looking into purchasing a contemporary kilt for more 'everyday' use, instead of risking dirtying up my nice traditional one.
Would someone kindly explain the differences between the different brands I've heard about here, like Utilikilt, Amerikilt, Bearkilt, etc... and provide any suggestions about which to purchase.

Dylan,
Check out Bear. He has on his websight a kilt comparison of many of the kilts we wear, a valuable source of information!

I'm a recent kilt binger...her's short and sweet, but check out the websites. www.kiltment.com has a good list of links.
Freedom Kilts, Steve is a fast custom house, good quality. Pick and choose what you want on it in the way of pockets.
Pittsburgh Kilts, Jeff is also a custom house...if you want a kilt in your school colors he can do it. He's making a three color kilt for me now (Arizona flag colors). His standard kilts are very nice.
Amerikilts, Michael makes a quality product, larger operation. And, in my opinion, has the best belt source for simple but wide kilt belts.
Utilikilts, unless you get lucky you're probably gonna wait a while, but a quality kilt and funky people cranking them out. The black workman's would fit well into any gothic/punk/etc outfit.
SportKilts, probably the fastest turnaround, but also the least kilt-like...I've worn them to concerts and conferences but no one else has been a kilt purist at those events. They do have the Leatherneck tartan if you're serious about the Marines some day...if the old Marines like me on this board don't talk some sense into you before you sign them papers...Semper Fi dude.
You can also browse the old posts on this board and get a good feel for most manufacturers and custome kilt makers.
Remember, that kilts are like flowers...all beautiful, and all different kinds...sometimes making a decision is the toughest.

Forgot.
If you're hot for the USMC check out Pittsburgh Kilts Forest MARPAT and Desert MARPAT kilts. I have one of each and I love them.
Also, if you're not doing it already check the manufacturer's photo gallery on this board...and Ham's photo site for sure.

I'm looking for something a bit more traditional. Perhaps those lighterweight "drinking" kilts, with a tartan, or one in just a solid color. Nothing too elaborate or too contemporary (no camo).
Anyways Riverkilt, thanks a lot for the help. That definately helped me out a bit.

Many thanks for the 'mention' Ron. Yes, Dylan, take a look at my Photo Album over at IMFF.NET (the link is at the bottom of this posting). There are over 70 images, over 7 pages, of my various kilt outfits - not only traditional but contemporary Scottish, Utilikilts, Amerikilts, etc. I cannot (yet) claim to have a representation of every kiltmaker's art, but I am working on it. Some you might like, others you won't. Take a look..............

Those are some great poses you've got there, Hamish
Anyways, I think I'm sort of leaning towards the Utilikilt, but doesn't it take a while to make them (as stated in a previous post)? Does anyone know if they ship to Canada?

Utilikilts definately shop to Canada. I have ordered two kilts from them before. If the kilt you want is in stock, you can get in within 2-3 weeks. It used to quicker, but USPS started to ship every percel to Vancouver and it created a back log.
Check out Bearkilts.com because Bear has a list of kiltmakers on his website
