Although not by any means my most frequent, I have to say my favorite is Formal Evening Wear.

I suppose that this is due to the fact that the older I get the more I dislike how informal our society is getting. I own more ties now than I ever have before.

For better or for worse the black Argyll has been the standard piper's dress for decades now, and being a piper that's what I usually wear for piping at weddings or funerals or what have you.

I have rebelled against the standard pipe band sporran that the vast majority of pipe bands wear- oh, I have one, and I have to wear it in the band- but I display my love for vintage Highland Dress by wearing a 100 year old cantle on a new goathair body which imitates a typical late Victorian/Edwardian look. That and the 100 year old pipes. This is how I appear at most gigs, more or less

I actually prefer dressing like this, and do when I think I can get away with it

BTW here's the black Argyll being worn by a piper many years ago

I prefer either casual or informal day wear. I am most comfortable in those levels of dress and enjoy the various material textures (both visually and tactile). I try to dress relatively the same even without a kilt... That is the level most often appropriate to me and when things get too fancy, I'm usually going as part of my military obligations as well - so clearly I have a specified uniform for that.

In the interests of comfort, for me it is definitely casual day wear, which is just as well as that is what I wear most days. However I am happy to dress up to suit the occasion as long as there is a kilt involved.
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!

Looks like informal daywear is winning! I'm surprised there aren't more doublets etc...!

Informal daywear seems to be the most applicable to just going out and about on daily business. I can't imagine having a lot of need to dress up on a very regular basis beyond. Again, that is just in my opportunities.

OK, now I am getting totally confused. In looking through this thread it appears that "informal day wear" requires a coat and tie. I find it hard to believe that in Scotland they always wear a coat and tie when going out informally. Here are 2 pics of me in what I always considered "informal" traditional kilt wear. Is this wrong? Am I actually dressed in informal contemporary outfits just because I am not wearing a coat and tie?

Now I am totally confused, why did one pic show up and the other not. Both pics came from the exact same file on my computer.

I do like evening wear. I think it is sharp and not seen, even in Saxon wear, very much anymore. That said, I get to wear it little and it seems a bit over the top for most of what I do.

Anyway, here are some gratuitous doublet images for you Nathan
