OK, now I am getting totally confused. In looking through this thread it appears that "informal day wear" requires a coat and tie. I find it hard to believe that in Scotland they always wear a coat and tie when going out informally. Here are 2 pics of me in what I always considered "informal" traditional kilt wear. Is this wrong? Am I actually dressed in informal contemporary outfits just because I am not wearing a coat and tie?

Sailortats, by the OP, your outfit would be casual rather than informal. Not to split hairs, but a jacket and/or tie is usually worn "informally".

I suspect you are correct that the average person is dressed CASUALLY rather than informally in Scotland (of course, I've never been, so just a guess) as well as elsewhere.

No I think some tend to overthink all this and it might help those outwith these shores to think of Formal-----Smart -----Casual as we tend to do in the UK and then leave the degree of Smart(for example) to personal choice and judgement. In passing, just because we might choose to dress casually does not mean that we have to dress like a tramp!

So heres me in my traditional version of casual for that particular day. A hot day when I called in, on the way back from the airport, to see some sort of international games. Did I need a cromach? Yes I did! My back and hip were killing me. Did I need to wear a bonnet? Yes I did, I needed it to display my dandelion. Would I have normally worn a bonnet on such an occasion? It would depend on the weather and the need of a dandelion.

OK, but these are photos everyone here has seen before. A couple of examples of "informal day wear" or "smart day wear", which is my usual manner of dress when in a kilt (unless weather dictates otherwise)...

OCR...great pics, although some might suggest ball caps and t-shirts might better fit the contemporary category.
