A rare (for me) contemporary novel - "The Thousand Autumns Of Jacob De Zoet". The author, David Mitchell, takes a little known historical event (the 1808, HMS Phoebe, Nagasaki Harbour incident) and writes a beautiful novel around it.

Just finished reading, again, "The Battles of the Somme",1st edition, by Philip Gibbs. When you know about the carnage of the Somme and lack of success in the gain of territory over 5 months in 1916. The heavily censored account written at the time by one of five official British war correspondents was a masterpiece of hints and suggestive thoughts on casualties and conditions. One needs to be able to read between the lines with this book.

If you enjoyed that, try "The Sagas of the Icelanders" with introductions by Robert Kellogg and Jane Smiley, et. al. It's over 700 pages containing 10 sagas, 6 tales, et. al., published by Penguin Books, 2001. It will keep you busy for a while.
