Our preference is to have the customer in shorts where their knees are visible. This way, the midsection around the navel is not compressed and easy to measure and the knees are visible for taking the length.

But I have to underscore that it is CRITICAL to follow the instructions of YOUR kiltmaker. Different kiltmakers do measurements (and use them) differently, even though the finished kilt would fit exactly the same. Don't try to second-guess your kiltmaker, and don't go to a tailor to have the measurements done. Many tailors simply ignore specific measuring instructions for kilts, assuming that they know everything about measuring people for garments.

I can't stress what Barb said enough. Always, always follow the instructions and preferences of the person who will be making your kilt.

Even when someone comes to me and asks to be measured for another kiltmaker I will go to that person's website and download the measuring sheet.

For example - If I am measuring for a kilt I will be making I know that drop means from the top of the waistband down to the hem.
If Barb will be making my kilt I know to measure Drop from the center of the top strap down to the hem.

If your kiltmaker asks you to be in jeans then be in jeans. Or wear your kilt to their shop and take a pair of jeans to be measured in.

    Jock,

For as long as I've been around you've been the voice of tolerant traditionalism around here, so it shocks me to hear you once asked for something that a kilt maker was unwilling to accommodate! What could possibly have been so outrageous to his sensibilities that he would refuse your business?
