My Scottish Wildcat tartan kilt by Bill Sanderson debuted for its first kilted Friday. The photo is how I dressed for work today. At day’s end I met my sweetie at Park Lane Tavern. On my walk there passing another outside bistro I heard a wolf whistle. But I paid no attention as I had my eye on the beautiful brunette chatting on her smart phone sitting on bench who had locked eyes on me. She give me a big smile using her free hand to swipe an expressive gesture saying with an Italian accent, “beautiful!”

A good Kilted Friday.

Nothing too adventurous looking about this photo of me sporting my new Lamont Ancient kilt (not to mention the rather glum, pre-Vodka Martini expression on my face), mainly because it was taken BEFORE my condo neighbor took me to see the Vaudezilla Chicago Burlesque review--in which a belly dancing co-worker of hers was performing--later Friday evening (OK--NOW I've seen everything). No wolf whistles (for me, anyway) but LOTS of compliments on my kilt, including from one of the most, ahem, "visually appealing" members of the troupe at intermission. I plan to step out in my new Lamont Weathered kilt next Friday...

Out and about on a few errands Friday and was complimented good-naturedly as a 'character', at Saturday's outdoor market is where a few ladies had some fun comments. The kilt remains out of the ordinary here; rather hoping wearing often changes that a bit.

That's the idea (among others)--to change the assumption or perception that the kilt is a Special Occasions Only garment--which of course it isn't--and that wearing one is always somehow the wearer's presumed attempt to theatrically or eccentrically draw attention to himself--which of course, it ALSO isn't, no more so than wearing a turban, or a sari, Western boots, cape, monocle, etc., etc., etc.

Last Friday and for the weekend, I attended an event in Brighton, on the English South Coast. There were a number of other Scots there including the one who took this picture of me. I can't think why most of them came and introduced themselves.


Despite it just being a cheap, casual acrylic kilt, I got lots of nice comments from all types including all the Scots. Of the Scots, one said he wished he had the courage to wear his kilt and another that he never felt comfortable in it. The latter on further questioning admitted that he only wore his kilt on formal occasions and that its high rise and the accompanying jacket and waist coat, which he could not wait to divest at the earliest opportunity, were the reasons. When I told him about casual kilts and their general availability, he was genuinely surprised.

My experience has been that most non-kilt wearers don't know an inexpensive kilt from a "proper" one--all they see is A Bloke In A Kilt. And as I've mentioned before, nothing--except perhaps the sound of piping--gets a Scot's attention when he's away from home like someone wearing a kilt "out of context." It does seem that the Scots themselves do regard traditional Highland attire and kilts in particular as a bit of a tiresome stereotype and cliche, and do reserve it only for formal events, if ever (they say that if you see someone kilted in Scotland, he's probably a tourist). I too have had people express surprise and interest when I wear my casual kilts, especially my solid colour cargo pocket utility kilts made of heavy cotton twill, and I really do think more men (and women) would wear those if they knew about them, especially when they discover how practical AND incredibly comfortable they are (particularly as an alternative to short pants in hot weather), and although I'm not sure I would welcome it or not, THAT would possibly lead to kilts becoming a very prevalent and trendy mainstream, youth culture/pop culture, leisurewear/sportswear thing which, again, could be either a good thing or bad thing...

Saw only one kilt while out and about casually kilted yesterday ..when I passed a mirror on sale display. My wife was chuckling over the compliments she overheard from 'the older ladies'. There's that faint ray of hope that wearing it often will bring some others out of storage to be seen and complimented also.

I had a good day. A client came into the office and remarked to one of the brokers how she "Admired my look." Later, the cashier at a store told me she was "Diggin' the kilt."

In the afternoon, I tried to gather some information about carport lights not working at one of our apartment complexes, and I got a few looks. What, you've never seen a kilted man on a step stool changing light bulbs?

Yesterday, was my 8th Anniversary of membership here; so a XMTS tartan kilt was the appropriate choice to wear for kilted Friday. This one is a USA Kilt semi-trad. I got a call for one of my directors that his granddaughters were selling organic cucumbers at their street side stand. So I went down to check if they had Solicitation Permit from the HOA.

I'm on a Kilted Friday XMTS tartan streak as I am wearing another today, this one being a USA Kilt casual. The folks were I work are so use to me being kilted on Fridays, not one comment. If I failed to wear one, however, I am sure they would think it wasn't Friday.
