He can wear a tie in his tartan if he can find one. Scarfs are always good in season. Other than that he can just be proud of who he is and stand proud in his other tartans until he is able to get a kilt.

If there is a clan society available to you he can get to know people. Sometimes kilts 'shrink' or, more rarely, grow too large. Those can sometimes be purchased by the sad owners.

Very good, with a Scottish National kilt you avoid the issue of mixing Clan tartans!

I don't see how anyone could object to wearing a Clan tartan and Scottish National together.

We are lucky because the Buchanan tartan is popular with a number of outlets. We can almost always find a shirt from LL Bean, Orvis, Land's End etc - even JC Penney has sold them. We also find PJ's and even boxer shorts. Our Clansmen are always on the lookout for advertisements with our tartan in them!

Of course this doesn't help you much, but keep on the lookout and search their websites under plaid shirt or tartan shirt or even your clan name and you never know what might pop up.

Neck ties and pocket squares work well, and cufflinks have been mentioned a few times. There is a gentleman on here that wears tartan slides on the shoulder straps of his motorcycle jacket and some have brought up wearing a patch of tartan behind their cap badges. Most only wear their balmorals when kilted, but I use it as my go-to hat for most modern situations; kilted or not. Also, I've come across at least one place where you can get lapel pins that look like a shrunken square of tartan in a plain metal frame.
Keep your rings charged, pleats in the back, and stay geeky!
