I had a lovely visit with Gordon Nicholsons shop last summer when I was in Edinburgh and had a close-up look at one of the lasses work, who was stitching a kilt as I was watching. Her work was better than mine...not that that's saying much! I would purchase a kilt from Gordons shop any time.
Also, if you're in Inveraray, I had a nice visit with Redshank Kilts and was impressed.

As I visited them both, concerning customer welcoming, I had only good experience with Redshank and was also impressed by the work of the latter.
