I'm not sure if the bro hug is a strictly American thing or if it transcends geographical boundaries and is practiced by dudes and bros everywhere. It's basically just throwing a hug to another guy, often but not always after a handshake. You'll often, but again not always, include a firm slap on the back whilst fully engaged in the bro hug, so that everyone knows it's a very manly greeting.
Here are some great examples of the bro hug, courtesy of the NFL:
Apologies to the OP for the thread detour.

Yep, the bro hugs are very common along us the deaf men in the United States. :-)

Thank you Ratspike for that. I have never seen one of those over here. A hand shake, seems to suffice in my experience.

My surname is Ferguson, which did come from the plantation owners in Jamaica. You'll find most West Indians have a Scottish surname. In that youtube video, I was surprised to see at least 47 black kilted soldiers in that procession before I stopped counting Thanks for that. It's nice to see such variety and diversity

Ah, now I see it. Thank you for the clear explanation.
It does make me think of something from Cyrano De Bergerac, along the lines of "why, he's practically my brother.... well, actually cousin.... well, actually distant cousin".
Even if the word "cousin" doesn't have the same visceral reaction in the US, I'm sure most of us have felt annoyance at someone insinuating themselves closer than they deserve. Too often a sales person or someone who wants something, in my experience!

We bikers and soldiers that are long time friends will hug on sight. The best of friends will give a subconscious kiss on the cheek after a long absence.

Frankly, you do look great in tweed. I'm not sure if I can pull it off myself!

It is interesting how behaviors can vary. I was recently in a grocery store, and heard a female voice behind me, saying "Sir, isn't that Davidson tartan you are wearing?" I turned, and found I was being addressed by a nice looking middle aged lady, accompanied by two teenagers, which from appearance and demeanor were her daughter and daughter's boyfriend. "Yes, it is" I replied. I have the honor of being a member of Clan Davidson." "Wonderful," she said. "I'm a Davidson as well, tho I'm married to an Armstrong". And she proceeded to hug me. I am not myself overly fond of hugs from strange women, but I gave as good as I got. The daughter piped up, rolling her eyes at her mother "Mother! Hugging a man you just met, to whom you are not remotely related!" Her outrage at her mother was so full of offended teenage propriety at the excesses of the older generation, I could not help myself. "Ah lass, but that's what being fellow clansmen means - We are REMOTELY related!" I thought the boyfriend would hurt himself laughing.

Wow CompaqGuy that tweed outfit looks amazing on you! A very nice colour-choice.
(PS when one of us meets Jock Scot we should lay a bro-hug on him!)
