African Kilt - Traditional African cloth made into a Scottish Kilt!
Hi folks,
Thought I would share this as I had never seen anything like it. Recently a customer came into the shop who had been around Africa and brought back some traditional African cloth. He asked us to make it into a Kilt for him, and we did!

It turned out really well. The light-weight cotton wasn't ideal for making a Kilt - the pleats might not keep their shape as well as heavyweight wool - but we were happy with the result and the customer was delighted!

I was just having this conversation with my wife (from Ghana) about getting a 'Kente Kilt' made - her mum's a seamstress so I'm going to commission her to make a kilt for me out of the cloth! The original Kente cloth is very heavy, so this will be similar to a 'tank' in terms of weight. There is a lighter 'Holland print' cloth I could use but I'll have to see how prices measure up.

Wonderful work. It would not be easy to define, pleated to the sett or stripe. Would a liner have helped hold the pleats (stiffer)?

Having spent a year in Ghana in the days of my youth, I saw people wearing very beautiful Kente cloths. I had never thought of using that kind of cloth to make a kilt! Truly a fusion of cultures.

The Kiltmaker did a great job pleating - a slightly different challenge than they are used too!
The photos were taken before the Kilt went for a final press, so the pleats look a little loose. They held much better than expected after the press, but a liner could have been an option to ensure they held their shape.

There are two types of Kente :- the Holland Print waxed cotton, which is thin but quite sturdy, and a thicker woven material. The thicker one is better for a kilt, but a lining of the thinner cotton can be used to add weight. Not too sure how it pleats, but I am thinking to ask a local kilt maker to help me make one

Thats a very good job of matching the design of the material with the pleats
Colorful and well done
