The crown symbolizes loyalty. According to Wiki, claddagh rings have been produced in Galway since at least 1700. The crown as a symbol of loyalty, and not necessarily to a monarch, goes back much farther than that. There have been "Fenian" Claddagh rings produced, sans crown, but apparently they haven`t caught on.

I would not get too wound up about it John. A crown it is, but its a "Kings" Crown as opposed to a "Queens" Crown and nothing like the ones worn in the UK by the Monarch, or emblems of such.
