What a wonderful heap of welcome messages and many thanks to all those who gave advice, it was all very useful and I appreciate it very much.
Tarheel,My daughter is actually a young Grandma in her early fifties learning to play the pipes, something she has wanted to do all her life but only last year plucked up the courage. As for the XX I always sign my name like that but I am pleased it made you feel a little younger for a moment or two..I wish it worked for this aged poster too.
Tulloch,My daughter has hired a very good local teacher. Re the socks, well I have been making regular socks for half a lifetime so no need for practice pairs but I promise I will keep you in mind if one day I decide to knit a kilt...hows that !!
Thank you all again, you seem like a grand bunch and I look forward to getting to know more about you all.

What a delight to get your response. One is never to old to be surprised and feel younger in the aftermath. A warm O and X on the cheek to you this fine morning.
PS. My wife says, (as she reads over my shoulder) "Don't encourage him."
