    cross-cultural kilting

The Algoa Caledonian Pipe Band appeared on the front page of The Herald on 25 September, the day after South Africa’s Heritage Day holiday. The picture shows a band member checking the material of the kilt worn by Zamuxolo Mgoduka, a gqirha or traditional healer.
Note that the gqirha wears Royal Stewart, whereas the band looks a great deal classier (or at least not fashion-bound) by wearing the Black MacPherson tartan.
But oh no! they’re wearing white hose!

Correct cross-cultural observations include matching head covering by the gqirha, white hose for the pipe band (uniformity), tartan hose with spats for the gent on the left and smiles for all. Great photo.

Oiy what's this classism against one of my many family tartans? Royal Stewart is just as classy as Black MacPherson

My criticism is not aimed at Royal Stewart as a clan tartan, but as the tartan that is touted everywhere by all sorts of people who do not produce decent material. As a clan tartan it is among the best, but as a fashion tartan it is regrettably common and a fallback for people lacking in imagination.

I've seen so many people say you can't wear a kilt unless you're Scottish/Celtic. At best, that reeks of ignorance, at worst, racism. I love it when people who aren't of Celtic origin wear kilts! It helps to end all those misconceptions and gives a boot to the face of the racists.

Cross-Cultural Kilting is (or can be) Kilting At It's Best, as I have stated before. In Heraldry, the (Noble) Savage--which symbolizes Man at his fearless, unselfish, aboriginal, primitive, unbiased, State-Of-Nature best--is depicted wearing a loin cloth, which is what a (filibeg) Kilt is. Variations of, and elaborations on, the loin cloth/Small Kilt/filibeg and middle body wrap/Great Kilt/Feileadh Mòr are geographically prolific in history, e.g., the Shendyt of Ancient Egypt, the Toga of Ancient Rome, the Shuka of the Maasai and the Sarong of Southeast Asia. Also, the Trachtenmode jackets and lederhose socks of Bavaria are excellent and definitive cross-cultural Kilting items. And, as an African-American who is deeply proud of the Celtic roots of his family tree, I personally
still intend to someday make good on my "threat" to have (at least one) kilt made from Kente Cloth. KILTS AROUND THE WORLD!
