    More tradition - a fresher (first year student) at St Andrews is known as a "bejant"/"bejantine" from the French "bec jaune" = yellow-beak i.e. fledgeling. The corresponding terms at Aberdeen are "bajan"/"bajanella" showing the French influence in the founding of Scottish universities.
    Yet more tradition - students dressed formally for the "pier walk" at the start of the academic year

    The lassie on the right is a third-year arts student, the other 2 are fourth-year students - the way the gowns are worn is the clue.
